WHAT'S A TRAINING SESSION LIKE AT FIRST 2 STRIKE FREESTYLE MARTIAL ARTS?
Training at First 2 Strike Freestyle Martial Arts can entail a variety of training methods and techniques, and no 2 classes are identical, though there is a structure and there are the "staples" of our training. All that we do is dedicated towards Self Defence, and also improving fitness and having fun!
Below is a list of the "staples" of our training diet.
1. STRETCHES
Let's get the body loosened up. Warm up and loosen those tightened muscles and develop that flexibility to reach higher for your kicks, but that's not all, it also does wonders for your body in everyday life. Our stretches are based on yoga, stretching from head to toe, static and dynamic, and with importance on breathing - exhale/inhale.
2. WARM UPS
Warm-ups entail a number of things on different days. Standard warm-ups would include the practice and repetition of your basic techniques. From punches, kicks and blocks. The warm-ups could also include sit ups, push ups, burpees, squats and other stamina and strengthening exercises.
3. SPEED DRILLS
Striking at high speed. They’re fast and they push your stamina levels. You'll put on a sweat.
4. COMBINATIONS AND PATTERNS
Combinations are the back bone of our training. Each belt level has its own combinations and patterns. The Combinations would contain a minimum of a block, punch and kick, in, as you might gather, combination. The idea is to repeat until they become instinctual. You can apply them to the focus mitts, the bags, to your sparring and 0f course to a real life situation. Patterns, are based off the combination, including pivoting footwork and movement. Combinations and Patterns are similar in idea to the ‘Katas' in karate and ‘forms’ in Tae Kwon Do and other striking arts.
5. 3 & 1 STEP SPARRING
This is semi-contact constructed sparring, in either 3 steps or 1 step movements. There’s the Attacker and the Defender. These are also based off the combinations from each belt level. It develops timing, footwork, defence and attack. And it's a good workout!
6. DEFENCE DRILLS
Having a great defence, gives you a great offence! Here you practice defending against punches and kicks. helps build reflexes, footwork, timing, and build a strong defence.
7. SPARRING
We have 2 main types of improvised sparring. Attack Dill and Awareness Attack Drill. Attack Drill is more of a non-contact to semi-contact sparring method that helps develop creativity and target focused sparring.
Awareness Attack Drill is semi-contact to full-contact sparring, which develops your defence to attack techniques and visa versa with your partner.
Develops everything from reflexes, timing, defence and attack, speed, creativity and more...
It’s fast, its in your face and its alot of fun!
8. CLOSE RANGE/RESTRAINTS & JOINT LOCKS
Close Range consist of all your escapes/releases and responses. Wrist escapes, choke escapes, hair grabs and so on…Restraints and locks have very little striking, but rather about restraining your opponent and stopping them dead in their tracks. It's the "pain game" - pain is their enemy.
9. BAG
We use the kick shields to put all your techniques, combinations, patterns, creativity, skills and aggression into action!
This is too much, and a hell of a workout!!!
10. EXTRA STUFF - This could be a range of a myriad of activities. Focus Mitts, Grappling, Ground Work, Footwork Drills, Fitness and Stamina exercises and more…
11. AND FOR THE KIDS - PLAY TIME - LET'S PLAY A GAME - Fun games for the kids after a tough training session. Kids love games, and why wouldn't they? They're so much fun!!!
First 2 Strike Freestyle Martial Arts is open to new methods and techniques, and it's about developing and evolving, self improvement and progressing to mastery.
...and it's great for all ages. Kids will love it, teens and adults. So no matter what age you are, get into it at First 2 Strike Freestyle Martial Arts.
See you at training…
